Rowdy the Raccoon

AWRE received a phone call from the Long Beach Animal Control, who had an orphaned raccoon in their possession. They estimated his age to be about 4 weeks old and wanted to know if we could help rehab him.Rowdy the Raccoon

From past experience, we knew a Raccoon is between 31/2 months to 5 months old before they are old enough to be released and have to be taught all the skills necessary for survival in the wild.

Knowing the Wildlife Waystation to be an excellent facility to train and rehab orphaned raccoons, we made all the necessary arrangements to have them rehab this young raccoon. However, we were unable to make the trip to their facility for a couple of days with our young charge, whom we had named "Rowdy" because of his disposition.

During these days we had to bottle feed Rowdy, who was still very unsteady when he tried to walk. He wasn't injured, just very young and still developing his motor coordination. Despite his young age, we could see a strong stubborn streak developing.

We delivered Rowdy to the Wildlife Waystation, knowing he will be taken care of properly and released back into the wild as soon as he's capable of surviving on his own.
